This girl is hot, reminiscent of a female Andre Benjamin. She came to Boston University recently to speak about not fitting into the mold and I am still slightly resentful of missing her. Her music is weird, out of this world, but so necessary. She has even garnered the attention of heavyweights such as Big Boi and Diddy. (People will probably recognize her more now from her guest appearance on “I Want to Work for Diddy,” but if so, please don’t admit that. Just say you heard it here first.) So, if you weren’t up on her before, there’s no excuse now.

Never heard of her. Is she fairly new?
Comment by =) — October 31, 2008 @ 10:56 AM
Uh oh, she’s linked up to Diidy? Don’t people realize that that is the kiss of death? Sorry to say, she might not make it cuz of that
Comment by Mega — October 31, 2008 @ 10:57 AM
Yeah, she’s definitely weird lol
Comment by Madhatter — October 31, 2008 @ 10:58 AM
Female Andre Benjamin? That’s a lofty comparison, no? Chick needs to prove herself before you say that
Comment by Trini — October 31, 2008 @ 10:58 AM
Does kinda give me a "Heyy Yaa" vibe though
Comment by Jaime — October 31, 2008 @ 10:59 AM
Didn’t Big Boi discover her or first put her on? Why is Mr. Combs trynna take the credit then?
Comment by Kaleo — October 31, 2008 @ 11:01 AM
Her music and hair are bold but I’m tired of her wearing the SAME SHIT everyday (monmochromatic tuxedo-esque black and white). Apply the same creativity to your image as in you art boo
Comment by Il Duce — October 31, 2008 @ 11:01 AM
Yeah Dustin, she’s just getting her shine so you’re not too far behind.
Comment by Gemeniul — October 31, 2008 @ 11:03 AM
I’m still trynna figure out if this is shit pulled from her ass labeled as creativity or real art that I need time to absorb first lol
Comment by Winter — October 31, 2008 @ 11:04 AM
Kaleo,
Let her music speak for herself. As an artist, her image isn’t and shouldn’t be her primary concern. You want people to listen not just watch.
Comment by Kaleo — October 31, 2008 @ 11:07 AM
Winter, I inderstand what ur saying but the thing is she actually did put some thought into her wardrobe. It’s just that she hasn’t changed it up since I first heard about her in like 2006. I’m actually a fan of hers, don’t get me wrong. Idk hopefully she’ll switch her style up and continue to re-invent herself next album. But if that’s what shye’s comfortable with, more power to her
Comment by Yessir — October 31, 2008 @ 11:07 AM
Yeah, not for me
Comment by Cheyenne — October 31, 2008 @ 11:08 AM
She just came to speak? Why didn’t she perform there?
Comment by Hovito — October 31, 2008 @ 11:11 AM
She reminds me more of a female Fonzworth Bentley and that is not a compliment
Comment by Max — October 31, 2008 @ 11:17 AM
She’s a little weird looking but nice voice. Not sure if I’d actually bump to this on my own though to be honest
Comment by Piata — October 31, 2008 @ 11:18 AM
She’s a good enetrtainer, much better than just seeing her in a music video. We’ll see how far she goes.
Comment by Klone — October 31, 2008 @ 11:20 AM
Yeah, I’m not gonna lie. I saw her on that show. That’s how mainstream will get introduced to her, as "Diddy’s artist." She’ll forever be associated with Bad Boy, the sinking ship *shudders*

The video was different, not gonna hate on anybody who bringing a new perspective to this stale-ass game

She had a video before this one that kinda reminded me of Kelis’ "Saddest Story" or w/e the fuck it was called. Anybody know that name of that Monae video was?
Comment by Margo — October 31, 2008 @ 11:28 AM
I LOVE HER!
Comment by Trax 4 Daze — October 31, 2008 @ 11:29 AM
Yo, I wonder if Big Boi fucked with her cuz she does have that Outkast vibe going on.
Comment by Kilo — October 31, 2008 @ 11:31 AM
Aww, i guess Kelis ain’t the weirdest/strangest/most unique chick in the game anymore.
Comment by Trini — October 31, 2008 @ 11:33 AM

honestly I hear Janelle Monae a few years back on a big boi track. and I immediately took an interest in her. glad to hear that she is doing her thing and that Diddy isn’t messing up her style.
Comment by A-Mex (SOTB) — November 3, 2008 @ 1:15 PM
wow I like the sound of Janelle Monae, it’s like she is a hip hop opera singer for some strange reason. it’s different, buts it’s also good. so thanks Tania for this post, I thoroughly enjoy the song. does she have any more singles?
