J Dilla Tribute (Part 5)

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Part Five includes more favorites of mine, this is the last installment since I could go all month dropping Dilla cuts.

Pause (from Welcome 2 Detriot) was probably the first time I “got it.” This was the song that showed me what every Dilla beat usually contains, obscure chops, neck snapping percussion, rich basslines, and did I mention the drums?! whew. Make Em NV is the same formula to perfection and his remix of Lucy Pearl made that song soo much better. Beauty Jackson was mixed so beautiful and its a real pleasure to listen to, plus Ghostface drops an ill short story about shorty he met at the bus stop. Beauty Jackson also displays Dilla ability to loop off numbered bars of songs, he did this for Q-Tip’s Move and Jaylib’s NowADayz.

Frank N Dank – Pause

J Dilla – Make Em NV

Ghostface – Beauty Jackson

Lucy Pearl – Without You (J Dilla Remix)

J Dilla Tribute (Part 4)

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

Part Four includes Get A Hold, which I loved to begin with, but enjoyed soo much more when I heard the sample he flipped to make that classic. Stakes Is High has a similar back story to how it earned my love but I feel it’s the best J Dilla track ever IMHO. E=MC² has the illest drums on a Common track and Ason Jones is so emotional that is HAS to move you.

Common – E=MC²

De La Soul – Stakes Is High (I wasn’t going to put the classics but I love this one too much)

A Tribe Called Quest – Get A Hold

Raekwon – Ason Jones

Timeless: Suite for Ma Dukes 3DVD Box Set [03/30/10]

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

The Suite for Ma Dukes Orchestra on the fourth anniversary of J Dilla’s passing will be releasing a 3 DVD Box Set entitled “Timeless” on March 30th which includes the Suite for Ma Dukes event held last year, and it’s mixed by the legendary Bob Power (De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest, The Roots, etc.). The footage above is of Miguel Atwood-Ferguson’s arrangement of Dwele’s “Angel,” backed by the Suite for Ma Dukes Orchestra.

“Today is the fourth anniversary of Dilla’s untimely passing. People are celebrating his life all month long. At Mochilla, we have spent the past year working on A Suite for Ma Dukes. Until now we have held our cards close to our chest releasing videos and entirely instrumental pieces. But today in homage to the man responsible for all this we are releasing, just to you, the first vocal performance from Suite for Ma Dukes.”

“Dwele sang Angel that night without rehearsal. It is a classic. Miguels’s arrangement is super heavy and Bob Power made it magic.” via VTech via NahRight

J Dilla Tribute (Part 3)

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Part Three of my favorite J Dilla produced songs in tribute to his birthday and subsequent passing (today).

It’s Your World is such a great song, each verse tells a vivid story and was a great way to end BE. Won’t Do is relaxing, and never seems to get old or boring with that loop. I Must Love You was an instrumental I used to listen to a lot and Guilty did it justice. The Look of Love pt2 = Sexy (nhjic).

Common – It’s Your World

J Dilla – Won’t Do

Guilty Simpson – I Must Love You

J-88 (Slum Village) – Look of Love part II

J Dilla Tribute (Part 2)

Tuesday, February 9th, 2010

Part Two of my favorite J Dilla produced songs in tribute to his birthday and subsequent passing.

The original version of The Red is crazy, when I first heard it I had to find out who it was by, nuff said. Africa is soo chill and its put together so well I wish it was longer! All Good is actually too short, that beat knocks, the bassline on it feels nice in every system I’ve heard it on, I dont even care that its like the 4th version of Look of Love he’s sampled. The Eve remix was my introduction to Steve Spacek and stands out as my favorite joint of his besides Dollar. *kanye shrug*

Jaylib – The Red (Original)

D’Angelo – Africa (Tell me Dilla had nothing to do with this, pshh)

Illa J – All Good

Spacek – Eve (J Dilla Remix)

Ma Duke & Pete Rock To Release Posthumous Dilla Album

Before renowned Hip Hop producer J Dilla passed away in 2006 due to complications from the Lupus, he had already recorded a number of unreleased tracks, including music he produced during his stay in the hospital. More than three years after his death, Dilla’s mother Maureen Yancey, who is better known as “Ma Dukes,” [click to read] along with Dilla’s idol and respected Hip Hop producer Pete Rock [click to read] are planning to release a posthumous project of Dilla’s unreleased beats and samples, called Jay Stay Paid [J$P], late this spring.

Executive produced by Ma Dukes, J$P will feature music pulled off of Dilla’s old floppy disks and DATs, as well as later tracks laid down during Dilla’s time spent in the hospital. Ms. Yancey assures that the project was not rushed, nor was it done haphazardly.

“This album combines what he did in the beginning of his career, [and] what he did in some of our early hospital stays, which was very deep,” she explains. “This is like the missing links to Dilla’s legacy.”

The format of the album plays like a radio show with Pete Rock acting as a radio DJ. While largely instrumental, J$P also features guest vocals from artists Black Thought of The Roots, MF DOOM, and M.O.P. All are artists that Dilla worked with or admired.

“Dude was amazing,” said Pete Rock, who shared that he and Dilla held a mutual respect and high level of regard for one another. “He just kinda came out of nowhere and the more you heard his beats the better they got. He may not be with us, but it’s all good we’re going to keep his music alive and well.”

Jay Stay Paid will be released on June 2 via Nature Sounds.
