Where the hell are the talented female rappers at?

| Thursday, July 17, 2008

So I was surfing through MySpace music the other day to see who the top rated hip-hop artists were. What I found actually made me puke in my mouth a little. The number one female hip-hop artist is none other than Ms. Tila Tequilla. Are you serious? People actually listen to that crap. So I decided to take a little listen to see where all the hype was coming from, I thought maybe she actually is good. Well sorry folks… she is absolutely terrible. And no offense Tila lovers but her face looks likes she’s been run over by an 18-wheeler a few times. Wow that felt good to vent out.

So on to more important business, where are all the TALENTED female rappers at? It’s almost as if they’re nonexistent anymore. This makes me really sad. So I’m going to do a little recap on who I believe are some of the most talented female rappers of our time. Unfortunately they are all getting old and will most likely retire soon. So I’m hoping this post will inspire some amazing female MC ‘s to get off their asses and make some damn good music. Hip-hop has become an overwhelming sausage fest, and its making me sick to my stomach.

My favorite female rapper of all time is…….MC Lyte. This chick is just straight up bad ass, and her carefree lyrics have helped shaped the way I am. Hailing from Brooklyn she first came on the scene in 88’, and instantly blew people away. She was a hot ass bitch who dressed like a thug, talked like a thug, and basically did whatever she wanted lyrically. She has a dropped a total of ten albums over her career, and will still be putting them out. And….she is still hot as hell. She was the first rap artist (yea that includes men) to perform at the historical Carnegie Hall, the first female rapper to receive a gold single, the first solo female rapper to be nominated for a Grammy and the list go on. She will be in Boston on July 19th alongside KRS-1.

Next up…undoubtedly Lauryn Hill. She is amazing, her lyrics are genius, and she is gorgeous. The girl has 5 Grammy’s from the best female rap album of all time, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.  Most credibly known for being a part of The Fugees, her sound became the key to success for the group.

I could go on about this forever, but I believe that these two women are the two most talented female rappers out there. Here are some very honorable mentions: Queen Latifah, Missy Elliot, Foxy Brown , Left Eye, Da Brat, Trina, Jean Grae, Rah Digga, Lady Sovereign, Lil’ Kim, Eve, etc.

Who’s good now? I’m really into M.I.A , Santogold, Nneka(a little bit reggae), and this chick Tasha from Korea (videos  below). I wouldn’t necessarily call them female MC’s but they’re the next best thing in this failing genre.

It sucks that a girl has to sell her body like a hooker to get attention in Hip Hop. The only place I can think of where female progression is moving at a snail pace.

And what sucks is that some of these rappers didn't even have the talent to write their own rhymes and used their more famous mentor as their ghostwriter. What's the point of being a rapper if u don't even write your own rhymes??? So you are famous because you can recite?

Oh and the fact that rappers like Lil Kim and Foxy Brown's bad behavior give them more press than their music EVER will. Way to go down in the culture's history

But we have to admit that there is a double standard. I don't like Lil Kim of Foxy as much as the next girl, but dudes say the same shit that the say and its fine but when a female does it she's a whore. Have we not learned anything from Sex and the City? j/k
