Fly Music For Fly People

| Wednesday, October 15, 2008

I couldn't think of anything too deep to discuss this week (not that there probably isn't a WHOLE bunch of shit going on), so I figured I'd give a heads up on some new music I've been listening to while being stuck on the computer this past week.

hopefully someone here will dig one of these selections: (google any of these names and you should find some free mixtapes by any artist mentioned)

Ohio love=

Columbus, OH - Fly Union
Just dropped a mixtape w/ Mick Boogie...like 25 songs on there, more than half are originals.  Soulful beats.  Emcee influence is kinda on some Jay/Clipse steez with some humor and a conscience (but not 'conscious' rappers--i hate that title).  Beats are just redic.  They bang in cheap computer speakers, so imagine what they do in a car. I've seen their producer J-Swif in a couple Columbus beat battles and he won both of 'em pretty easily. Dude's sick. Both their mixtapes 'Closed Doors Open Windows', and 'Kill Fly U' are available as free downloads.

Cleveland, OH - Kid CuDi
Known for his appearances on the 88-Keys mixtape, as well as Kanye's new LP. Dude is dope. More melody driven, marijuana-inspired, spaced out dope shit. Dude KILLS hooks like nothing.  Kinda has a lil Kanye influence in delivery. Beats are all over the place. Takes some time to grow into his shit, but once you do, it just sticks in your head.  Download 'Man On The Moon' mixtape.

Cleveland, OH - Chip Tha Ripper
Of all these artists i've mentioned so far, Chip is probably the best rep of 'Ohio' hip-hop. Cudi and Fly U. step outside of the typical Ohio sound. Chip just builds upon it. He's cool in that he can slide from some Ohio hood shit to some Kidz in the Hall Okayplayer shit relatively easily.  That's a talent.  I'm not really sold on dude's flow like that, but his personality is fun on a track.  You can tell dude really enjoys recording.  Hit up www.slabup.com to check out a free mixtape download.

Midwest Love=

Black Milk - elec mixtape
The prelude to TRONIC (elec-TRONIC--ahhhhh, i get it).
I haven't checked for any Black Milk shit since popular demand, so it's nice to play catch up.  It's worth it.  Dope mixtape.  Flows well, bangin classic 'D' beats. Shit knocks.

Royce 5'9' - Bar Exam 2
Dude sounds like 'Hit Em Up' 2pac in a good way....on like, every song.  Makes me care less and less about another Eminem album, and wish Em woulda ran with Royce instead of D12 all those years ago.

So, there you go...hope yall enjoy atleast ONE of these mixtapes.  Every one is different from the next, but give 'em all a chance.

Finally, please take a quick second to vote for me at
http://www.citybeat.com/cincinnati/best-of-18-cea-music-nominees.html
in the hip-hop category of the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards.
I would greatly appreciate it.
And again, I'll be in NY all Nov. hit me up w/ some fly new spots to go to..clubs/kicks/dig spots/anything @ www.myspace.com/illpoetic.

Funny, Royce DOES sound like Pac from Hit Em Up on several tracks, he gets really intense. You can tell the engineer was pissed cause Royce was sending his levels into the red constantly.

I can't mess with that Black Milk mixtape simply because I own like 90% of that music, they pretty much were all good albums. He's a great producer but I still wasn't trying to listen to that Fat Ray album without hearing snippets first, Ill get around to eventually though, as with most new music.
