FREE ADVICE: Don’t Give Up

Wednesday, December 31st, 2008

Hey guys,

in the end of the year its work hard time…enjoy your last days in ‘08…we are on time in 09…the new year doesn't seem to be  a changing point for everyone, but with everyone wanting to change
We cant say no?

I prayed for someone I was very jealous of…at a low point and was having the worst Dec 27th ever. My family was not to get together this Hanukah….they were not to play the cards right and we just had lots of issues. Sometimes we act like babies… sometimes we want things in our time…and not G-d's time. You can’t just become a rapper and all of a sudden go on tour with your favorite rappers. Does that make sense? You have to work hard…work hard…be patient…and still wait…and wait again…no not this time…not next year either…but patience.
You can’t just become the manager without first being an employee. You have to listen, learn, and put your learning into action.
So back to my story…
I was driving to the Asher Roth show/Matisyahu sold out…and I was so mad….soooo mad…(due to my family circumstances) I began to shed some water and panic…

Yeah man it was bad…it was tough….imagine having a good life and not having the fam together…feels weird you think right? "why is my family so like this…everyone is late…no one's here!! I’m crying on the phone to somebody whining and all that jazz.

I looked at a text message and it was a simple "who's this?"

I told him it was Rami aka Kosha Dillz

I had randomly texted this guy to have a good shabbos the day before…

He asked me "word…so C-Rayz should be in town to sit in on some shows…would you do this song _______

Next thing you know I’m turned around…traffic is too bad….I gotta go home.

I left my house with no ticket and a bad attitude (but I prayed the day before for someone else's happiness and success)
What?
Yeah I prayed for someone…
Why? Because…I needed to for my soul….praying for other people's health and wealth and success…is something us grinding hip hoppers aren’t inclined to do…its not in our blood!!
I came back with my Hanukah gift. It was not wrapped….but definitely kept under wraps until G-d decided to let it out the bag.

It came out in its best form…sweating bullets on stage! My greatest moment in 2008 came to fruition because I let it happen.

By the time the next night was over, I was invited back for two more of the greatest moments in 2008. Performing in front of a joyous sold out Williamsburg Brooklyn crowd while doing the hora with C-Rayz and Nosson Zand (bean town representative).

The video above is a jam session with C-Rayz Walz, Matisyahu, and Kosha Dillz, all live on stage for the first time performing the song "CHILDHOOD" produced by Mr. Green off the album "The Dropping."

We are allowed to give up hope on occasion… we all have our downtimes…but I guess you can’t ever stop praying to keep the hope alive if not for us, then for someone else. Only when we do things for free with no expectations or hidden agenda.

Keep at it guys. It'll happen when it’s supposed to.

See ya next year. Please be safe.

Kosha Dillz & Rock The Dub

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Below is the full interview of our resident blogger Kosha Dillz by Khal of Rock The Dub, Kosha talks about his past and his future.

khal: First off, how did you get started out within Hip-Hop? Were you always trying to be an MC, or was it something you just fell into?

Kosha Dillz: I’d say in high school, from the parties. The freestyle session. People reciting Wu-Tang lyrics. I was never tryin’ to be an MC, I was tryin’ to be in a band. I did want the attention of a band or a guy in front of a crowd. I got that a lot as I wrestled in high school. One-on-one competition in front of lots of people. With rapping, I found myself in battles a lot.
khal: I know you're reppin' Beverly Hills, but I just found out that you are Jersey born and went to Rutgers. What was it about Rutgers U that drew you in? What are your thoughts on the NJ Hip-Hop scene?

Kosha Dillz: Ha I’m actually rapping in Beverly Hills. I’m going to the studio right now. I’m posted up in Koreatown, Los Angeles on a couch. I’m in the studio all day recording the Beverly Dillz album with Belief while promoting Freestyle vs Written, the album I have with C-Rayz Walz. Rutgers U drew me in from its education prestige, wrestling program, and proximity to home of Edison, NJ. The NJ Hip-Hop scene is very spread out. You can do a show in New Brunswick, North NJ, South NJ: I would not know about it. Princeton. NJ is quite big. It just has not filtered; the only scene to be North NJ and New Brunswick. Pace Won. Yak Ballz is here. Mr. Green. Cymarshall Law. Silent Knight. These guys are getting super amounts of burn locally in NY and globally. 8thW1 as well, but I know lots of us migrate to NYC for the show.

khal: I know many heads have just been introduced to you via the Freestyle vs Written disc, but how long have you been releasing music?

Kosha Dillz: This is my first release. I know how to make music. What worked with ourselves and Modular Moods was that we came together to present it.

khal: Let's get into the FvW CD; how did you first meet C-Rayz, and how did that meeting spark you guys doing a full project together?

Kosha Dillz: Ive known C-Rayz for a long time I met him 9 years ago and bought a cd off of him (The Prelude). He saw me drunk many times on stage making a fool of myself. He saw me get booed. I saw him perform many a few times in NYC. I started booking shows for him and getting on like that. I continued to get better, and when I kept getting better I approached him at a sort of time where myself and Kentron Da Mastodon thought we needed to make a move. The good thing is, we approached him and asked him to do something he never did before. If anyone knows him, they know he is the type of guy not to turn down a challenge, although I feel like he excels best in freestyle, especially after seeing him do it all over the USA.

khal: Now the title is a pretty obvious nod to how you guys worked, i.e. Walz freestyled all of his rhymes, while you wrote yours, and I read this came about due to his situation at the time, needing to get the project done. How did the recording actually work – did you have your parts done, with Walz filling in the gaps, or vice versa?

Kosha Dillz: We had like 3 sessions. One day it was an EP we did 6 songs in like 7 hours. The next time we went to Belief's and he did 4 more songs in 4 hours. Our last session was a mixing session and we ended up freestyling two songs on the spot. I had a vision for this project and wanted to make a custom collabo project to introduce a new vision that can bring me out and bring him out, and Kentron as well. It benefited everyone, including the engineer. As someone who has been very impulsive, I felt this could equally benefit us all with its cultural diversity and conceptual format.

khal: How does it feel to be getting feedback from magazines like Spin and URB? Were you expecting this project to get that kind of shine?

Kosha Dillz: It feels great. We worked very hard to get this project and I must thank the help of Diwon and Y love, my label mates form Modular Moods/Shemspeed. They really pushed for us all as a team to get out in to the mainstream. We are the only rappers in that section, besides the obvious Charles Hamilton and B.o.B.. That was from the grind though.

khal: Any plans for a future project with Walz?

Kosha Dillz: No plans, but we both are not people who have been known to make plans.

khal: Now, your name is definitely a play on your Jewish heritage. Do you feel like you're pigeonholed as being a "Jewish rapper" as opposed to just being a rapper?

Kosha Dillz: No. I'd rather be that though. I think that makes me who I am. And if I am good enough to be in magazines and tour the world with my music, and places like rock the dub interview me, than I am not pigeonholed! I am on lots of Jewish press and more so mainstream press. Lots of my friends are like "the Jewish rapper." Only non-jews say that though… haha. Jewish people don't; funny right?

khal: Who are some of your favorite MCs and producers going down right now?

Kosha Dillz: Belief, Bishop Lamont, Black Milk (3 b's hahah), U-N-I and my homies; basically Yak Ballz, Flex Mathews out of DC and this kid Roebus One who I'm bringing up. Yak's new album is gonna be sick; Murs of course, Aesop Rock and Grayskul. And Shi 360 of Israel. These are people I have performed with and they are truly the stage energy I'd like to bring to the table.

khal: What's next up for Kosha Dillz? Word has it you're working on a sample-free project with Belief?

Kosha Dillz: Yeah, Beverly Dillz. Strictly for the movies. Its very musical and it will for sure shock many people with the stuff I'm doing. I like being shocking. Finally I have been getting to do it in a good way. Shocking like "hey I'm Beverly Dillz!", not shocking like 4 years ago, "hey mom I'm in jail… again… and again… and again…"

khal: Where would you like to see your music career be in the next, say, 5 years?

Kosha Dillz: I'll have broke the mainstream, for sure. Be on top of the world and continue to better myself on every album that is presented to the public. Count Bass D told me to just make the music and make all of the people come to you. I like that mentality.

khal: Do you have any final thoughts or shout outs before we wrap this up?

Kosha Dillz: Freestyle vs Written is an incredible album. Please buy it at the links below here. rock the dub will put them here and click away, what do you say, hey! Oy vey! Shalom yo… now it's off of this person's Mac and to Belief's studio.

Fashion: In My Flyy Tee

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

I’ve realized recently that I need to stock up on more t-shirts. What makes this task impossible is that I’m all about exclusivity. I hate rocking what another chick has on and wearing t-shirts is so universal. But I’ve found some lines which cater to my taste: femine, sexy, and just flyy. I’ll let you in on my secret:

“Obsession” tee
The site has re-launched with a new holiday collection. This line caters to the ladies who know they are rated a ten. The name alone is reason for me to want to rock it.

“HBIC” tee
“A crime for all seasons” is their tagline. This label is for the girl who loves to create controversy. My favorite t-shirt from them is one I own, a manicured hand saying “fuck you”, but the middle finger is cleverly a Barbie doll.

“Jane” tee
This line celebrates the “boss bitches” (their words not mine) in all of us. It has expanded to a full brand spanning from jeans to bikinis. Check out an interview with the founder here.

BRING THA NOIZE TOUR 2009

Friday, December 26th, 2008

It's official! La Coka Nostra has joined forces with Sub Noize to bring you our debut album, 'A Brand You Can Trust'. We are very excited to be working with Kevin Zinger and the entire Sub Noize family and look forward to finally unleashing the LCN war machine upon the current candy-coated, watered-down and auto tuned-out musical landscape that popular rap music has become," says La Coka Nostra's ILL BILL aka the Cult Leader. "This record is a no holds barred burst of hardcore hip hop to the fullest, representing everything we love about this art form but feel is missing from the game right now. To show you we're not alone in our thinking we're bringing Snoop Dogg, Cypress Hill, Bun B, Psycho Realm, Immortal Technique & the Alchemist along for the ride. We know a lot of ya'll feel the same way we do, so we're using our voice to speak for those that may not have this opportunity. That's why La Coka Nostra is 'A Brand You Can Trust'. Album in stores first quarter 2009!"

Maybe once in a musical era's lifetime does a revolutionary collision occur at the four-way intersection of underground, old school, new, and mainstream. Such an anomaly has finally materialized within a hip-hop world that has – for all intent and purpose – otherwise been tapped out. Founded on a new breed of rappers, but further injecting the mix with iconic veterans of the game the result is LA COKA NOSTRA.

Composed of members Ill Bill, Slaine, Everlast, DannyBoy, Dj Lethal and Big Left, La Coka Nostra is a breath of fresh air in these days of contrived airbrushed rap music.

Filming Biggie Nostalgia

Tuesday, December 23rd, 2008

Watching the trailer for "NOTORIOUS" is weird.

Actually, to get deeper, the 11 year build up is even weirder.  I’ll explain. [more]

I’m old enough to remember the Biggie/Pac thing in HD 5:1 surround sound memory.

I remember where I was when 2pac got shot (the 2nd time) and when Biggie got shot.

The thing is, it was a big deal, but it’s amazing to have watched it grow to the myth it has become over the past 12 years.

For instance:

There was a period of six months where A LOT of people hated BIG…that six months was from Sept. 12th, 1996 to March 9th, 1997.  Everyone in my school wanted BIG dead (they were Pac fans, ESPCECIALLY the girls). Kats even defaced a picture I drew of BIG in my art class.  It ran deep, but I imagine it ran no deeper than how kids now feel about a beef between…well, whoever’s beefing now that matters.

The reason the legend of BIG and Pac grew so big, I think, was the years of dickriding that followed. ESPECIALLY for Pac.  I mean, dudes just massacred his image.

Master P, Ja Rule…really, anyone (minus DMX) with a bandana tied up front and shirtless..they know what’s up…kats didn’t jock BIG’s look so much as his versatility.

BIG set the blueprint for how Jay-Z put records together, let alone the next 10 years of hip-hop (the girl joint, the “regional” joint, the street joint, etc.). But BIG did it naturally.

Much like Pac’s look was natural.  Everyone else (and they’re label head) mimicked the outer-shell of  these 2 three-dimensional artists for damn near a decade. But no one ever got it.

Or maybe it was the media. Everyone from VIBE to TIME looooooved covering this beef.

And EVERYONE was hopping into it, from Chino XL to Ice Cube. It kinda became a free-for-all.

But, at the heart of it, Pac and Big were Tupac and Chris.  They were 2 friends that got into it.

One claimed he fucked the other one’s wife.

This happens a lot.

This brings me to the “Notorious” trailer.

It’s weird to see people playing BIG and Pac and Kim and Faith and Voletta and Puff like this is "Ray" or "Walk the Line".  It’s hard to take them seriously when I feel like the whole thing just happened.  It’s weird to see the epic nature that all this created.

It’s not a good or bad thing, it’s just weird when it develops this way.

Like, why  Big and Pac? Why was this battle so epic?

Was it the media coverage?

Was it because every generation (from Hamlet to Britney Spears) loves to have epic stories to pass on?

Was it because of the 10 years of carbon-copying of these artists?

Was it a combination?

I honestly don’t know…probably a combo.

But it’s crazy to see it unfold like this.

What do yall think?? I’m really interested to know, especially on the age tip.

Because some kids are younger, and were probably around 3 when 2pac died..which REALLY changes their perspective. They probably feel about Pac how I would feel about Marvin Gaye. The legend was born before I was.  Some of you might be older.  How do you see this, since you might have been adults in ’96-’97?

Just curious.

Also,  as always, I gotta include something free.

Below is a remix to the song “Move” off my record:

Featuring Illogic, Donwill (of Tanya Morgan) , Rideout, Iyan, and Skandal.

Enjoy.
