2008 Massachusetts State Ballot Questions

This post was written by ENIGMUE
November 3rd, 2008

For in depth knowledge about the questions go HERE. This is for eligable residents of Massachusetts (where I reside), if you want your state's ballot questions google search 2008 "state ballot questions" + your state (quotations not neccessary). Make sure to vote tomorrow (November 4th).

———————————

Question 1: Abolish State Income Tax (5.3% flat tax)
Although
this would put $3,600 (on average) directly into the bank accounts of
the average taxpayer each year, it would wipe out 40% of the state
budget and take with it a whole host of social services that we've come
to enjoy over the past few decades.

What Your Vote Will Do
A YES VOTE
would reduce the state personal income tax rate to 2.65% for the tax
year beginning on January 1, 2009, and would eliminate the tax for all
tax years beginning on or after January 1, 2010.

A NO VOTE
would make no change in state income tax laws [more]

—————————————–
Question 2: Decriminalize Marijuana Possession
This would
replace criminal penalties for possession of one ounce or less of the
drug with civil penalties, making it comparable to a parking ticket.

What Your Vote Will Do
A YES VOTE would replace the criminal penalties for possession of one ounce or less of marijuana with a new system of civil penalties.
A NO VOTE would make no change in state criminal laws concerning possession of marijuana.
—————————————–
Question 3: Ban Greyhound Racing
Would place a permanent ban on greyhound racing in Massachusetts. This has been tried twice before and was defeated both times.

What Your Vote Will Do
A YES VOTE
would prohibit dog races on which betting or wagering occurs, effective January 1, 2010.
A NO VOTE would make no change in the laws governing dog racing.

——————————————

Please discuss what concerns your state is facing on tomorrow's ballot.
Most importantly, remember to vote! (November 4th)

IMHO, I dont think our economy can sustain its social services with a 2.65% income tax rate and especially with no income tax. I dont really see why people would want a measly $4Gs over some of the luxaries we have living in the Bean.

They definitely should be leaner on the pot laws, until I see weed itself totally destroy someones life anyway, and I highly doubt weed alone is gonna send someone spiraling into violent crime.

The third question seems like a concern only for PETA advocates and prolly why its been shot down twice already. It brings too much income to the state and its problems haven’t spilt into a problem for ME, let em do their thing.

would you rather get a 100 ticket or go to jail and have that on your record? I know it’s not great, but it’s a step.

Question #3 is the best…whether to make Greyhound Racing illegal in Massachusetts…..it might actually pass this year but I don’t think it will.

Money coming back in the pocket is good in the shortrun but think about the bigger picture. This sounds like a farce, like the "stimulus checks". Shit didn’t stimulate anything. People paid their bills with that money.

"No" on all three although I do feel bad for the greyhounds who chase a rabbit that they’re never going to catch.

Definitely "Yes" on 3. It’s inhumane what goes on at those stoopid dog tracks…

Is Obama or McCain gonna take it? My money’s on whoever takes Florida and because Bush basically runs that state, McCain will win it. It’s 2000 all over again.

    UN:F [1.8.1_1037]
  26. Comment by the general — November 3, 2008 @ 3:32 PM

It’s gonna come down to one or two key states and Florida might be the difference. But if NH votes for Obama, that speaks volumes.

I want McCain to win so I can see Tina Fey do Sarah Palin for four more years.

  29. Comment by the general — November 3, 2008 @ 3:35 PM

All this polling means nothing because so many people are going to change their mind when they go into the voter’s booth. Tomorrow should be a National holiday if Obama wins.

If we have 4 more years of Republican rule I’m going to those stupid mid-west states that vote for McCain and blow them up.

as far as these local elections go, I am thinking no straight down. maybe yes for the decriminalization of marijuana that doesn’t seem too bad
