Following a ten-year hiatus, his second solo effort finds the highly acclaimed rapper embracing a newfound devotion and commitment to his craft, exemplified by an intricately designed track list that effectively bridges the otherwise elusive gap between hip hop subgenres and generations. In asserting himself as "the official party crasher" on the single "New Bikini," Tash defines his latest release by balancing this braggadocio claim with a different, more distinct declaration of self-assurance on the CD's opening track: "I always had a way with words." At the surface, "Control Freek" takes the guise of a playful West Coast party music, but Tash's raw lyricism and artistic integrity force listeners to think otherwise. Due in large part to stellar production that complements the rapper exquisitely-the pounding drum patterns of "Go West," the futuristic electronic synths of "Get it"-the album enforces Tash's ability to cater to both his early underground rap roots and modern-day pop tendencies, ultimately presenting an artist capable of running the gamut of styles within his genre. With guest appearances from Del the Funky Homosapien, fellow Alkaholiks founder J-Ro, and former Above the Law member Kokane, "Control Freek" is full of clever wordplay and shrewd insight from the some of the rap world's most beloved pioneers, and the combination of comical outbursts, ghetto adages, and bouncing melodies shed a welcome light on the state of hip hop today. In just one listen, Tash takes his audience on an extraordinary coast-to-coast journey almost two decades in the making-and there's no doubt he retains control brilliantly throughout the ride.
